Review of Cuisinart SG-10 Electric Spice-and-Nut Grinder

I bought it specifically for grinding whole flax seed.It grinds it to perfection in seconds.Although I use it for other nuts too, which I am extremely happy with it all.It is a snap to use, and is super super easy to clean, takes up little space on the countertop.Note that not wanting the lid to become foggy (as some plastics do in high heat) I no longer use the drying/heat function on my dishwasher, so after going thru the cycle it comes out like new everytime.If you are the kind of person who likes to have the cords tucked into the appliance then you may be a little disappointed as the cord takes a little fiddling to get it coiled back into the housing unit.In my personal opinion I think this product is superb, and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

The shipment arrived much quicker than expected. All the tools are made of great quality. The rolling matt is large and can be rolled and stored away, stays on the surface, and has circles and dimensions printed on it, which is very difficult to find. The rolling pin is heavy and easy to move around. The serving knife is large enough. The pastry blender is sturdy enough to blend butter in flour. Besides the colors, pink and silver, are very pretty! the addition of all is worth the price.

I was surprised as to how well this item actually worked when we opened and started using it.I purchased this as a 'filler' gift for my wife for Christmas.Knowing that it was a gadjety gift I did not have high expecations.We used this for fun and found out how easy it is to use and how cleanly it removes the cork.It opens many bottles on one charge, although we have not yet tried to prove the box statement correct that it opens 30 bottles on one charge.
Good for a person who struggles with conventional wine openers and breaking corks.

Review of Le Creuset 2.25-Quart Buffet Casserole

I bought the casserole, and let me tell you, everything I love about the French oven is present right here. Wider than the oven, it is, of course, shallower, but it still holds a healthy amount of food. Certainly it's big enough for a good-size casserole. It's also great for browning meat before baking. I find that pork chops (holds four small or 3 porterhouse chops comfortably) browned in a little olive oil, then smothered in vegetables and slow baked (covered, always covered!) at about 325 in this casserole, turn out moist and juicy and tender, with a gorgeous brown sauce that you can turn into gravy or just spoon over the chops. The vegetables emerge aromatic and tender. Everyone is happy, and the world spins contentedly for one more night. This is a high quality piece of kitchenware; since I got the French oven I've been sold on Le Creuset, and I'm here to sing its praises. Things don't burn unless you're not paying attention, and cleanup is a marvel. Who needs non-stick when you have enameled iron? The red, as I've said elsewhere, is very jolly, and might even provoke you to flights of Gaulic fancy (Vous: Et pour dejuner, les escargots en casserole! Les enfants: EUUUUUUUU) There are more sedate colors available, but I do recommend the red if you have a frivolous bone in your body.

I got this to use with canning for when you need something plastic and flat to stick in the jar to push against the contents to release trapped air bubbles.Before I was using a plastic spoon but it was not as flat as this is so sometimes was difficult to fit in the jar.This is made of a good firm plastic and is flat.

Review of Presto 6-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker

This is nothing fancy, but it works wery well. Replacemenat parts are easy to buy. You can't open it if it's under pressure because it has a lock by the handle (safety feature). Actually I think it's very safe as it has other features as well.
I think one of the most important things to look for is what it's made of (after safety of course!). This is stainless steel which is good because you don't want aluminum (aluminum will stain and get eaten away with acidic food such as vinegar or lemon juice...).
Another thing to consider is that it takes time to heat up and cool down so even though all pressure cookers say it takes a lot less time to cook, they don't take the heat-up cool-down time into consideration, even though they are correct about the actual cooking time.

Good pressure cooker.

In 2007, I bought a Kuhn-Rikon pressure cooker and I'm even more pleased with that.
It's quite a bit more expensive(4-7 times?) but a *lot* quieter as it relies on an internal spring to maintain pressure as opposed to gravity for the Presto. The Kuhn-Rikon also allows less water to escape. I keep both of them but I haven't used the presto for 4 months now. Considering I bought the Presto in 1999, it's amazing that it works perfectly even though it got heavy use. I even put the rubber seal and the lid in the dishwasher every time and it still held up. It's my backup cooker now as I can't let go of something that still works fine.

This is the pan that my children (and their parents) used for cooking
oatmeal, melting butter, making cocoa, heating soup, and an assortment
of other homely cooking projects. It's a great all-around pot that is
smartly designed and heavy enough to heat things evenly, but not so
heavy that carrying it when it's full will be a chore. In contrast to
French copper pots, this one has a stainless steel interior rather
than tin, and is considerably more useful, because lighter in
weight. If you occasionally forget about the rice or the oatmeal, your
pot will not be wrecked - even after hours of heat baking the

Review of Keilen Italian Villa 14-by-15-Inch Rectangular Bread Baking Stone with Jumbo Pizza Cutter

I'm no expert on baking, so I can't really say if this is the best stone out there, but it does the job for me.The only gripes are that, since it's somewhat porous, it collects flour sometimes, and it's hard to get them out, they they do come out pretty easily once they carbonize from repeated baking (though that in itself isn't the best outcome!).

Be sure to measure your oven to be sure this will fit.

If you need to substitute in a pinch, I hear that unglazed ceramic tiles from your nearest home-improvement/supply store will do the trick, but I don't know what the price comparison is like.

Review of Circulon 2 10-Inch, 3-Quart Covered Dutch Saute Pan

We bought this to replace a Circulon saute pan that was over 16 years old and it was rusting in the grooved interior. The original was all metal without non-stick coating. This pan appeared to be the equivalent with the coating added. I like the new saute pan both for even heating and for its durable non-stick coating. I have used it for over a year now. The one disappointment is that this is thinner or lighter metal than the original. Foods and sauces can scorch or burn more easily. The original was amazing for how scorching or burning were avoided, apparently thanks to the grooved Circulon surface in the bottom interior of the pan.I must be more vigilant now with this pan and I place it on par with other good saute pans I owned before the Circulon.

We have a large (extended) family living in one household and we go through 4-5 pots of coffee in a day.This urn is an inexpensive way for us to meet the demands of all the coffee drinkers here.And everyone likes the coffee it makes.The only thing I miss that I have on the drip machine is the timer (we have a couple of very early risers) and easy on/off.We attached ours to a timer so that it will start brewing early enough.One other thing - not a complaint, but a note about how it works, since it is a percolater, it takes longer to brew.Expect about 20 minutes for a full pot.

We use this coffee urn every day.If we wear it out, I will purchase another one just like it as it is so reasonably priced!

It arrived with a broken handle.As you can see in the picture, the handle is a little samll for a heavy skillet like this one.But no problem, I packed it up, returned it, and a replacement was received considabily fast!(for super saver free shipping, Amazon probably lost money on this purchase for sending the heavy skillet 3 times (original, return, and replacement).Great service Amazon!

I had no experience using cast-iron cookware prior to this one but I consider myself and pretty good cook.I did a lot of reading and research on cast iron, and gave this a try.It works great!The pre-season coating worked as promised.I use it to prepare steak mostly and the result was nice.I am still experimenting and adjusting cook time as this piece works differently than any other cookware I had before, but I like what it can do so far. I have seen the same skillet (except for the boy scouts logo) selling cheaper at Walmart.But for something that heavy, I can understand the extra cost even just for shipping.I have not seen one with the boy scout logo anywhere and I think it looks a lot more handsome that the regular one.Combining the 2 factors, I think the extra few dollars was well worthed.

Ever since I have the skillet, I am constantly watching for good steak on sale from the local georcery so I can do more (rewarding) experiments.

Review of Pyrex Storage 6-Piece Rectangular Set, Clear with Blue Lids

We were pleased to find that these containers can be used for some types of COOKING, not just for storage.

We like the convenience of containers that can be used for baking or microwaving, and then covered and used to store any leftovers, without scooping into different containers.

These containers do not have handles on the sides, so they can be tricky to grasp with potholders when removing from a microwave or regular oven.On the other hand, the lack of handles does allow these rectangular containers to use space efficiently in the refrigerator.

The paper labels/inserts indicate these Pyrex glass containers are oven safe (in a regular oven, preheated), and microwave safe, freezer safe, and dishwasher safe.However, like most Pyrex, they are NOT broiler safe, and should not be used on stove-top burners. There is also a warning against use in a toaster oven.

The plastic lids should not be used in a regular oven, of course.I assume we should unseal and loosen the lid, before we put a container in the microwave.

The plastic lids go on easily, and fit OK, but are not perfectly tight.I think if I turned a container upside down, the contents would leak around the edges of the lid.I assume that if the lids are put in a dishwasher, they should only be on the top rack, if at all.When I looked at reviews for some other Pyrex storage containers, a few reviewers recommended hand washing plastic lids; they thought the lids might keep their shape better if hand washed.

We have not yet put these containers through dozens of uses, so I cannot yet say how durable they are.I will add a "comment" to this review in the future, if there are problems later on.

We have owned other Pyrex glassware for years.These containers seem just slightly thinner than the Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" containers which are extra thick.

Several years ago, we bought Pyrex "Storage Deluxe" glass containers (with the vent tabs on the lids); they have endured years of frequent use with no chips.However, we eventually had to replace some of those vented plastic lids.We were able to buy replacement lids from the manufacturer's world kitchen web site and/or phone number; I assume that replacement lids for this non-vented type of storage container can also be obtained.We have heard that Pyrex outlet stores may also have the lids.We have not been able to find replacement lids on this site yet.

On the paper labels/inserts, there are lots of warnings, but the print seems small (or am I just getting old and farsighted?).

The labels/inserts say: "Failure to follow these instructions can cause immediate or later breakage ..."I will mention some of the warnings and limitations here, so shoppers will know whether the limitations fit with how they plan to use the containers: "AVOID SEVERE HOT TO COLD TEMPERATURE CHANGES.""DO NOT add liquid to hot dish..." Hmmm, sounds like basting is out. The label advises: "Add a small amount of liquid to the dish prior to baking foods that release liquids while baking."

DO NOT "place hot dish ... in a sink, immerse in water or place on cold or wet surfaces." ... "Allow glass to cool before soaking."

More warnings:When using the container in the microwave, do not use a microwave "BROWNER", and "DO NOT use PYREX glassware items ... to hold or support popcorn bags, microwave convenience foods with special browning wrappers, etc."

For use in a regular oven, the label implies that we should PREHEAT the oven BEFORE putting a Pyrex glass container in the oven.I have heard that some ovens use extra high heat during the preheat step -- higher than any regular baking temperature, but I don't know that with certainty.I'm guessing that the exposure to extra high heat during preheating, could cause damage to Pyrex glassware.

The containers' side walls are sloped outward at a slight angle. Thus the length and width at the bottom are somewhat smaller than the length and width around the top edge.

I've been dying to get a set of dishes like this so I could make individual oven pancakes for my family. Imagine my surprise and confusion when I received one from my wish list (as a gift) and it's actually a set of 6! I haven't yet found in the description where it says it's a set, but I thought I could let people know. Otherwise, nice looking and sturdy, can't wait to try them out.

Review of Global 2-1/2-Inch Bird's Beak Peeling Knife

Among my assorted bird's beak paring knives, this one has a special place. There's no hiding place for any transfer of salmonella bacteria from poultry to produce, for this knife is made of a single piece of steel, and the solid handle has good weight. (Not all knives in this line have a solid handle.) Furthermore, it stands up to use and abuse, unlike any other knife I've ever had.

I bought mine in a specialty knife store (which has since gone out of business) close to ten years ago. After a nameless family member helped out in the kitchen, it seemed to have disappeared, and I mourned for this little knife. Turns out said family member had accidentally dumped it in the composter, along with a small mountain of vegetable waste. I boiled it and it rejoined the household.

Comfortable to hold, it does a variety of paring tasks well in the kitchen. Slipperiness mentioned in reviews of other knives in this line has not been a problem. Weight and balance are excellent. I like the completeness with which it can be cleaned.

If you have a kitchen or flower garden, you'll find good uses for it outdoors as well. I grow edible ginger, as well as the kind with flowers. For cutting the rhizome from the plant, this can't be beat. I also use it when it's time to thin the heliconias and strip old leaves off lilies.

In perusing reviews about other knives in this line, there appears to be concern about sharpening the Japanese-made steel. I use a Chantry knife sharpener and find it brings this knife back to an acceptable edge.

BOTTOM LINE: If you like the bird's beak style of paring knife, you are likely to find a use for this one. Amazon's price is excellent. I paid about twice the amount and would recommend it even at that price. If you've never tried a bird's beak paring knife, this one is reasonably priced and especially versatile for the reasons mentioned.

I was looking for something to replace my worn Club Aluminum set that I bought used at a yard sale 27 years ago when I was a newlywed. I bought this stadium cake pan before my Super Bowl party.It is a nonstick, heavyweight good quality cake pan.I was afraid that the cake would not come out easily due to the detailing in the stadium pan.To my surprise, the cake released easily and beautifully.The cake really looks like a football stadium!My guests were extremely impressed with the cake and I cannot wait to use the pan again.

One piece of advice is to slightly reduce the amount of cake batter placed in the pan.I used an 18.25 oz box of cake mix and the batter overflowed out of the pan and onto the bottom of my oven.

Review of Farberware Restaurant Pro 12-Inch Open Skillet

This pan looks and feels like a restaurant quality pan. It's very solidly built. The nonstick coating works well and seems to be of similar quality to my smaller All-Clad pan. The outside is brushed aluminum so you don't have to worry about scratches. The pan is a bit thinner than some of the high-end pans, but I prefer it since it heats up quickly, it's easier to moderate the temperature, and it's easier to maneuver. As far as I can tell it heats pretty evenly. My previous pan was a higher end Calphalon whose coating wore out within 2 years. In my opinion, it's not worth the investment to buy an expensive non-stick. I think you get more than what you pay for here.

Review of Tom Douglas by Pinzon Epicurean 15-by-20-Inch Slotted Chef's Board

This board is the largest I can fit in my dishwasher and unlike the rounded shape of the other boards the straight edges are to easier manage especially for drying and storage on edge.

Although thin and lightweight, Epicurean boards are very strong and the material helps your blade last a long time. I am amazed this product survives the dishwasher. It comes out safely sanitized with no warping or discoloration every time. The board surface does develop cuts with useage, but that is what keeps your blade safe.

The slotted liquid capture saves you from juices dripping on the counter top or the floor. But it isn't really designed well to transfer these juices to a gravy. Attempting to pour out any captured liquid into anything smaller than a sink can be a challenge.

I wish this board had the snap on silicone corners to help stabilize it like some other Pinzon boards. you will likely need a bar towel to keep this board from sliding around on most counter tops.

Review of Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned 10-1/4-Inch Deep Skillet

I'll keep this short and sweet; this is Lodge Logic's 3-qt. chicken fryer, without the lid. (Amazon says the chicken fryer is 4" deep, but Lodge's web site confirms both are 3" deep).

So... if you already have a 10" lid, don't need another one and want this style pot, this is a good value.

It has all the great traits you expect of Lodge Logic - excellent, even heat transmission, natural non-stick seasoning, and complete invulnerability to anything your burners can dish out.The size is very handy for things like chili for one or two, where the additional depth is welcome but a Dutch oven would be overkill, and the 10" skillet/chicken fryer/Dutch oven lid fits this pot.I'm very pleased with this deep skillet and already had a lid.

So... if you have a Lodge lid and/or have a 5-qt Dutch oven in the same order, go for this pan!If you want to get a lid with it, get the Lodge Logic chicken fryer; it's much cheaper than buying the deep skillet and lid separately.

These are a good basic pair of tongs.The little locking mechanism is easy to activate (push down to 'unlock').They are relatively short, but for stovetop cooking that is the way to go because you have a lot more control (versus BBQing which you might want a slightly longer pair to save your hands).I like the way the finish looks on these things, it is a nice, quality looking stainless.That being said, sometimes when I put them in the dishwasher, there is still residue on the tongs (like grease/fat, etc). But I think this is because we have a weak dishwasher.I think we purchased these for about ten bucks, and for something that looks good and works well, that is a great deal.

Alton is a something of a hero to me, but I was using a version of this long before there was a food network or the internet.I ordered my first one of this type from a printed version of The Bakers Catalog (King Arthur Flour Company).

I can't imagine using anything else to measure honey or other sticky ingredients.I also like it for thicker items like pumpkin or squash purees - the clear cylinder means you can make sure you don't have air pockets and getting the product out is a snap.I also like it for measuring yogurt. I don't use much shortening or solid butter, but this would be great for that too.

Beside how it preforms, I do like the fact that it's easy to clean and it gets a work out in my kitchen!

While the max measure is one cup, I don't care for the stability of the item for anything over 3/4 cup, but I don't count that against the item too much. I think it just means I'll have to buy the larger volume version too!

Review of Lodge Pro-Logic Cast-Iron Aebleskiver Pan

I've been cooking aebleskivers for several years in an excellent no-name cast iron pan that I bought in Solvang ten years ago.It is very well broken in with a smooth non-stick patina in all seven indents.I want to teach my sons how to cook aebleskivers themselves because they will be out on their own soon, and it never hurts to be able to attract a woman who loves Danish delicacies!

Therefore, I have been looking to buy some additional aebleskiver pans and I was excited to see this new pan from Lodge, so I ordered one to give it a try.I like the design a lot and am impressed with how it heats up quickly and holds it's temperature nicely.The first batch of aebleskivers had some sticking, but I expected that.I will need to use it a lot more before it has the same non-stick surfaces as my old pan (no, it's not for sale!), but I can tell that this pan will get there with use.

By the way, I've found that there are many recipes for aebleskivers and several different techniques for cooking them.I'm sure that they all will work well with some practice, but I'll describe the one that I've settled on, because it is so easy:

Heat the pan at a medium-low setting.Take about two cups of prepared pancake mix (I use Krusteaz Buttermilk) and add a couple of teaspoons of sugar.Mix it in and stir in enough cold water to make the consistency about the same as you would for drop bisquits.Don't overmix it and let it sit for awhile to rise a bit before you cook it.Put a little butter or margerine in each indent and add about a teaspoonful of batter to each indent (If you're new to aebleskivers, I recommend trying only three at once.)I then drizzle a little butter on the edges of each indent.After about a minute, I use a knitting needle (or chopstick) to turn each aebleskiver one quarter turn.I add a little more butter and then turn them so the round side is up.I keep turning them with a spoon until they're done.(You'll just have to break one of them open to check, because it's dependent on your batter and temperature.)

Once you get it down (usually after a few rejects), serve them in threes on a small plate with thinned out raspberry jam and powdered sugar.Once you eat them, you'll understand why people go through all this just to make a pancake that looks like a racquetball!

this product is excellent.Porcelain is nice and translucent.the product goes in freezer as well as microwave and oven.I used it for small souffles, flans, custards, or to warm leftovers.I also used them to make custards with bain marie.I put them in the dishwasher with no fear.The procelain is so nice that I used it from oven to the table.It is, I was told with no lead and cadmium, which means that I can put them in the fridge with food in it with no fear. Because I often make things and bring them to family gatherings, these bowls and lids have become indispensable to me.I will NEVER get rid of them or give them away.

The sculptured design is attractive, timeless, and presentable on the dining table.It's also easy to clean and doesn't hold dirt.Because I hand wash, having no dishwasher in my dinky studio apartment, this minor detail is tremendously important.

I like that these are clear class with no coloring; you can easily see the contents of the bowl.The glass also doesn't stain and scratch like plastic storage containers do over time.Mine have some scratches from years of use, but nothing like the gouges you see in old plastic containers.

The dark navy lids do not show stains and that's important for plastics that are used year after year.The lids still fit very well and they're easy to clean on the inside, unlike the aggravating grooves in my mother's old Tupperware containers.If I want to be certain that no leaking occurs during transport to a gathering, depending upon the contents, I cover the bowl with plastic wrap and then put the lid on.So far, so good.

I happened to see this set on display at a grocery store, thought it over a bit and bought it.It's one of the best kitchen purchases I've ever made.It's unfortunate that this set has been discontinued because I consider my set to be invaluable.

This pan is HEAVY enameled cast iron so it cleans like a dream!This is so thick and heavy that it won't bow or buckle under the largest roasts.What truly makes this unique is that it can be used on the STOVETOP!You can safely use this on an induction stove (or gas), then put it in the oven, under the broiler, and back to the stovetop to make a sauce.It looks really funny cooking with a pan like this on the stovetop, but since it distributes heat so well I don't have any hot spots if the burner doesn't fit.

Dishes that burn in other pans cook perfectly in all of my Staub.This is a great multipurpose pan which is the perfect size for a large chicken or standard cake.

The roaster looks very basic without any logos or bright colors, but this is a piece that is bought for function.If not dropped, it should last a lifetime.

This is my second pizza pan, my other is a deep dish and is not coated.This pan is definitely my favorite, it produces a nice thin crust and even crisp cooking. The size at 16" is just right for a family of 4. The non-stick works really well but keep in mind you need a big cutting board toslide the pizza on to cut it as you cannot cut on this pan.
