I bought this pan for two reasons, for grilling chicken and fish and the shape.It works great for grilling on the stove and the pan looks great hanging from a pot rack.It is heavy and solid, should last for quite a while.A pleasent surprise considering the price.

Starfrit Eco-Chef 10.5 Inch Fry Pan with Bamboo Handle

This pan is really non-stick. It works better than conventional non-stick pans. I've been using it for a couple of months and I love it. When my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, her doctor told her to stop using non-stick cookware. What does that tell you? Nonetheless I still use non-stick occasionally (to fry eggs, etc.) because I find it impossible to do completely without it in my kitchen. So this pan is a welcome alternative. It's made well, very sound construction.

Review of Starfrit Simplicity Aluminum 11 Inch Stir Fry Black with Red Handle

Good weight; not too heavy since it's so big, no so light that it would feel cheap or flimsy. Heats evenly. Cute design around the outside edge. Nice long handle. Altogether a great pan, especially for the price! I will say that it's too big for any of my "universal" lids, but that's OK.

Review of Starfrit Heritage Chef Ceramic Coating 12 Inch Fry Pan

Perhaps one day we will discover that ceramic coating is as toxic as teflon is rumored to be- but until then this pan is my #1 choice.The handle is a little awkward- it's totally round so it is a little tougher to grip than most other handles, but the rubber coating helps with this minor shortcoming.

Review of Starfrit Alternative Eco Pan 9-Piece Set in Reusable Storage Box

The smooth ceramic performs surprisingly well. You can't really fry an egg on it without oil, but it is more non-stick and easier to clean than hard anodized surfaces like Calphalon. I've now switched to Starfrit when boiling bones for stock because the froth leaves a ring on my stainless pots that is impossible to remove. I even deep fry in the sauce pot because oil splatter comes right off. It's nice that the coating extends to the outside (but not bottom) of each pan or pot.

Build quality is acceptable but not great--comparable to entry level non-stick offerings. The glass lids even look like they came from the same factory. Both the pan and lid handles are attached by Philips head screws which came loose after the first week's use. :(

The degree of the "Eco-friendly" and "better for the environment" claims is questionable. The application of conventional teflon non-stick to cookware is probably not great for the environment, but I rather doubt the application of this ceramic coating is pollution-free either.The use of "99% recycled aluminium" is probably behind those claims. But why the set ships in a plastic tote is beyond me. Would anyone store their cookware in it?

I can believe that ceramic is more inert than teflon, and that it is "better ... for your health", especially at the higher temperatures required for frying.However, there is no information about what kind of ceramic is used, or that is in fact safer, so you have to take it on good faith.

All in all a good second set of cookware especially if you believe teflon is carcinogenic. I would not use the Starfrit when thermal performance is critical, e.g. searing, because the pans are on the light side. 3.5 stars.

6 MONTH UPDATE
There is a chip in the center of the small frying pan revealing the aluminum despite careful use, i.e. no metal utensils and hand washing only. Who wants their food to be touching recycled aluminum? On closer examination, the ceramic finish of the larger frying pan looks like it was fixed by hand because you can see what looks like circular brush marks. The others in the set are perfectly smooth. Non-stick performance on all still pretty good (about 75% compared to brand new) but discovered that grease splatter from frying does not wash off internal walls so easily and requires some scrubbing to remove. Downgrade to 3 stars.

Review of Starfrit Light Cast Iron Fry Pans

I picked up the 11-inch version of this pan because the old cast iron pan (one of the really heavy ones) I had used was reclaimed recently by my mother after a long term loan. I think having a cast iron pan around is essential, but I have to admit, that super heavy model was somewhat of a pain to us. Which is why I wanted a more versatile one, and one that wasn't as tough on the wrists. This pan fit that bill perfectly. It has the heft and strength of character you'd want in cast iron, but more maneuverability. The stay cool handle is nice, too, when you're cooking on the stove. Last night though I was making a savory bread pudding in here, and started it on the stove, and then moved it into the oven. Luckily, I remembered at the last second before pulling it out of the oven that stay-cool or not, the handle was going to be hot after being in the oven. So, be careful in that situation, which will come up because of the pan's ability to go from stovetop to oven easily. That, plus the lightness, will really let you expand how you utilize cast iron.
